Tips
Survival
in the Australian Bush - If you ever go bush there
are things you
should learn and do beforehand! The Australian bush is not just one of
the most beautiful in the world it is an inherently dangerous place and
quite unforgiving.
Our
most important tip to you!
If
you are heading into the bush please
make sure to let someone know
where you are
going and when you expect to return before
you leave home. It is a good idea to give them any
contact details, phone numbers (providing phones will
work where you're going to go), map coordinates and copy of
your map/s
providing an estimated area you should be in,
in case they need to contact you or vise versa . Any further
information you can provide will assist in the search and rescue
process if need be.
If
you don't have anybody that you can use, ask your local authorities to
assist you. I'm sure you will always be able to let somebody know.

Groups of 4 are better than 3. If someone gets hurt 2 members of the
group can go for help in support of each other whilst the remaining
member can stay with the injured person to assist with first aid,
water, food, shelter and emotional support (very important when facing
this type of situation).

Stop
where you are!
Carrying on
further into
the bush may only get you lost even further. Not only do
you
risk becoming lost further, you risk hurting yourself or even worse. Do
the smart thing, find a comfortable spot preferably in or near the edge
of a clearing and start assessing your situation.

Signal
distress!
Yell, scream,
blow your
whistle, light a signal fire (be careful not to start a
major
bush fire that may end up consuming you, visit
our course to learn some safe methods of lighting fires). Our
on
line survival course teaches various methods of signaling with light,
sound, fire etc. Anything that you can think of that may attract
attention is good as long as you don't injure yourself or worse whilst
doing so.
The international distress call
is three
bursts of a whistle in rapid succession.
Yes,
this is one of those times that someone can't tell you to shut up and
stop being a nuisance. Make lots of noise.

Ration
your drinking water!
Water is high
priority
in survival situations, you
can't do without this stuff. If you've prepared before setting out on
your journey you should have some water with you, ration what you have
to make it
last. On average a person
needs around 2.5 litres a day, depending on the climate where lost and
the amount of physical exertion.
Try to
leave the work until the cooler night hours to avoid dehydration and
sweating which results in valuable fluid loss. Generally the less you
sweat the less water you will have to replace. If you have gone without
water for any great length of time it is not advisable to drink a large
amount in one go.
It is better to take small sips
wetting
the inside of your mouth and swallowing slowly, drinking a large amount
may only end up becoming a waste of precious resource due to your body
passing through what it doesn't need at the time.
Water is
critical in a survival situation and something that you must have. Food
is not so important as the human body can go many days without it.
Chances are, you will more than likely be rescued before it becomes and
issue.

Stay
out of the sun!
Unnecessary exposure to the sun will cause
valuable
fluid loss from your body. It is best to do as little as
possible in the sunlight hours and save any real work for the cooler
hours.

Stay
positive!
If you are unfortunate enough one day to get lost it is imperative that
you keep in the right frame of mind. You must not let your predicament
get the best of you, remember, there's always something you can do to
help yourself. Keep a
positive frame
of mind, if you have taken the proper precautions someone
should
eventually notice you missing and alert someone. Think of yourself as a
self-contained unit and don't give up!

Prepare as best as you can before you even step foot out the door. Sit down with
pencil and paper and think of every possible scenario that may happen
and plan for it.
Survival
Knowledge - You would be quite
surprised at just how many people
aren't aware of this necessity nowadays. There are no guarantees in
life as you know. If yourself and/or your family were forced into
having to survive on your own, do you think you could do it?
Why
is survival important? - Sadly
most people who perished in a
survival situation did so because they didn't know what to do and
weren't prepared. So numerous are the incidences where people have
ventured outdoors or into the bush without any real thought gone into
their preparations.
Unfortunately
due to this, many people have
ended up having succumbed to exposure, dehydration or wounds.
Thankfully
a great many people do eventually get rescued though you should not
rely on this happening. Think of yourself as a
self contained unit who is self reliant and ensure your own survival!
Please,
do yourself a favor and at least learn even the most simple things to
enhance your chances.
